Organic Chemistry Mastery Workshop

“I think this programme was really helpful as my school just rushed through the chapters and gave us questions to do after that. So this workshop, I find, is really helpful. It helped to tie up all the loose ends and doubts I had previously. Thanks to that, I am now starting to do questions already easily. Thanks alot, Mr Chua!”
Onittah Lola Nair, CHIJ St Theresa’s Convent 2009

Organic Chemistry is one of the highest weightage topic in GCE ‘O’ Levels / IGCSE / IB / IP Chemistry syllabus and therefore the importance of doing well for it in order to score well in exams.

However, many students have no clues on how to score all the marks they need in this topic because:

  1. Organic Chemistry (being the last few topic) is usually rushed through & neglected in school
  2. Very content-heavy topic which becomes boring if student read on their own
  3. Many of the sub-topics are connected together and requires strategy to conclude them
  4. Abstract & Theory Crunching – teachers lacks the life examples & props to make topic interesting

In Organic Chemistry Mastery Workshop, students will learn:

  • How to differentiate between Natural Gas & Crude Oil (Petroleum)
  • Petroleum is a mixture of hydrocarbons & its separation into useful fractions by fractional distillation
  • Uses of the different fractions of petroleum
  • How to describe an homologous series as a group of compounds with a general formula, similar
chemical properties and showing a gradation in physical properties as a result of increase in
the size and mass of the molecules
  • How to define isomerism & identify isomers in Organic Chemistry
  • How to draw & name the structures of branched & unbranched Alkanes, Alkenes, Alcohols & Carboxylic Acids
  • Manufacturing of alkenes and hydrogen by cracking hydrocarbons & its importance
  • How to differentiate between saturated & unsaturated hydrocarbons using aqueous bromine
  • Properties of alkenes in terms of combustion, polymerisation & various addition reactions
  • Properties of alcohols in terms of combustion & oxidation to carboxylic acids
  • Formation of ethanol by Hydration method & by fermentation of glucose
  • Strategies to draw the structures of carboxylic acids & naming them
  • Important chemical properties of carboxylic acids as weak acids
  • Formation of ethanoic acid by the oxidation of ethanol
  • Strategies to draw & name Ester from the carboxylic acids & alcohols provided
  • How Macromolecules is related to Polymer & Plastics
  • Strategies to predict the structure of Addition Polymers from its monomers
  • Common uses of Addition Polymers
  • Strategies to predict the structure of Condensation Polymers from its monomers
  • Common uses of Condensation Polymers
  • Advantages & Disadvantages of using Polymers in our environment

“I feel that this programme is very beneficial as I am able to understand more about the topic by many life examples and learning in an interactive group settings. I feel that I will be able to recall many examples and facts from the lesson without any problems as they are presented to me in many interesting ways (TRANSFORMERS!!!)”
Roger Chang, ACS (Independent), C6 (Mid-Year) to A2 (O Levels 2009)

“I do feel this workshop has been beneficial for me as I now understand and am able to grasp the basic fundamentals of Organic Chemistry. As a result, I am now able to apply what I have learnt efficiently in challenging questions related to Organic Chemistry, which I failed to do so before in school. I give this workshop a TWO THUMBS UP as it has painted my view of Organic Chemistry into a more simpler and easy to remember picture.”
Vivienne Tay, Holy Innocents High School, C6 (Mid-Year) to A2 (O Levels 2009)

“I have enjoyed this workshop as I now understand my Organic Chemistry better, as it is a huge and important topic in our GCE ‘O’ Levels. This programme is different as it is more interactive and we don’t get bored during the 4hrs. I like Chemistry more now and have gained a new-found respect for it. I would recommend this programme to people I know who would like to improve their Chemistry and score better grades in their exams.”
Shien Ling, CHIJ St. Theresa’s Convent 2009

“I enjoyed the lessons and I now understand Organic Chemistry much better. The topics are not so confusing anymore as the concepts were clearly defined for clearer understanding. This programme is different from other programmes as the master trainer, Mr Sean Chua, interacts with his students and there are lots of real-life examples he brings in to show the uses of plastics & polymers. I will strongly recommend my Sec 3 juniors and friends to come for this programme in order to improve their understanding.”
Mavis Tham, Tanjong Katong Girls School 2009

“I think it has opened my mind to much newer knowledge in which i would never get the chance to learn in my school. Also, the explanations are very clear and precise which would not create confusion or which makes me have problem understanding.”
George Chan, Queensway Sec School 2008
