Written 41 Years of O Level Pure Chemistry and A Level H2 Chemistry Papers

By Winners Education

I was doing spring cleaning in my centre and found the 10 Year Series books I have written over the past 10+ years.

These was the first books for O Level Pure Chemistry Topical and Yearly edition by Fairfield Book Publishers.

I started writing the suggested solutions, tips, common mistakes starting with the 2002 papers!

How time flies.

Just calculated, I have written 23 years worth of O Level Pure Chemistry papers!

For the A Level H2 Chemistry titles, I started writing the papers from 2007 under SAP Publisher. The photo below was taken at our old premises at Waterloo Centre.

So including 2024 papers, I have written 18 years worth of A Level H2 Chemistry papers!

A total of 41 years of O & A Level Chemistry papers! Sounds like a lifetime.

I hope my work has benefitted the students immensely over these years.

Titles just hot from the oven

Subject Based Banding SSB

By Winners Education

From 2024

With Full SBB in secondary schools, students will have greater flexibility to study more subjects at different levels that suit their interests, aptitude and learning needs. There will no longer be separate Express, N(A), and N(T) streams.

MOE will post students to secondary school through three Posting Groups – Posting Groups 1, 2, and 3. The PSLE score ranges for the three Posting Groups will be mapped from the previous N(T), N(A) and Express streams respectively.

Throughout their secondary school education, students can take subjects at three subject levels, known as G1, G2, G3 (G stands for General), mapped from the previous N(T), N(A) and Express standards respectively.

Singapore-Cambridge Secondary Education Certificate (SEC) examinations

From 2027, graduating students will sit for the Singapore-Cambridge Secondary Education Certificate (SEC) examinations, at their respective subject levels (i.e. G1, G2, G3). There will be no change to the examination format, and the SEC examinations will continue to be jointly examined and awarded by the Singapore Examinations and Assessment Board, MOE, and the Cambridge International Education.

Post Secondary Schools Admission

The existing JC admission criteria (i.e. L1R5 gross aggregate score of 20 or better, excluding bonus points) will be retained and computed with G3 subjects, to ensure that students have the sufficient academic foundation to access the A-Level curriculum

Source: https://www.moe.gov.sg/microsites/psle-fsbb/full-subject-based-banding/secondary-school-experience.html

What It Means for Your Child

Based on the pathways above, if your child wants to enjoy more options for post secondary education, they must be learning mainly G3 subjects since the admission to JC is for students who learn at least 6 G3 subjects and 1 G2 subject.

The Story of 2 IP Chemistry Parents

By Winners Education

The Wise Parent Who Thinks Long Term Because She Knows IP Chemistry

Parent 1: “My daughter is in RGS. I would like to enquire on the schedule of the Secondary 3 class.”

Winners: “It is every Wednesday 5pm or Sunday 3pm.”

Parent 1: “Can she start next week?”

Winners: “Though we have taught RGS previously, we would need you to find out the scheme of work for this year before we can advise you if your daughter can join us next week. May I also know how you get to know about us?”

Parent 1: “I’ll get the topics from her tonight. I search for your centre on Google.”

Winners: “Thank you for sharing. Since there are so many centres offering Chemistry tuition, we are curious on why you choose us.”

Parent 1: “I prefer a centre which specialises in Secondary and JC Chemistry so that my daughter can follow through the years. I also read that Mr Chua writes both the O Level and A Level Chemistry 10 Years Series so he must be very familiar with syllabus. I read from your website that IP students can join the JC classes when A Level syllabus is covered, do we have to pay additional charges? “

Winners: “Thank you for sharing. Mr Chua has written the solutions of more than 33 years of O Level Pure Chemistry and A Level H2 Chemistry papers. IP students may join our JC classes when their school topics overlap into A Level syllabus. This arrangement is complimentary for them.”

Parent 1: “Also, my girl is intending to join Singapore Junior Chemistry Olympiad (SJChO). Can she join the JC 1 class next year to get a headstart on the JC topics?”

Winners: “Sure! In fact, we have a 13 years old girl who is currently in the JC 1 class under our Fast Track Chemistry programme.”

A Tutor Asks The IP Parent To Find Another Tutor To Cover A Level Content!

Parent 2: “Does Mr Chua provide one-to-one tuition? My boy is Sec 3 in VS IP. I found Mr Chua him while searching online for A Level Chemistry textbook.”

Winners: “I’m sorry Mr Chua schedule doesn’t permit him to provide one-to-one tuition.”

Parent 2: “How big is the Sec 3 class now?”

Winners: “Weekday class is 4 to 6 students. Weekend class is at 8 to 10 students.”

Parent 2: “All right. That’s quite a reasonable size. Actually my son has a private tutor but this tutor is unable to handle the A Level topics my son is learning in school and I wasn’t aware that IP Chemistry has so much A Level content according to my son.”

Winners: “Each IP school is different and they have the freedom to decide their syllabus content but based on our years of experience, most IP Chemistry syllabus consists of 90% O Level content and 10% A Level content. It is very challenging to find a suitable private tutor who can handle both O Level and A Level content as A Level content is really challenging to understand, even more to explain.”

Parent 2: “Oh! Only 10% is A Level. If my son joins the Sec 3 class, how can he learn the A Level content? Also, can he consult Mr Chua on any doubts he has from school? ”

Winners: “We must have have the entire scheme of work from VS and Mr Chua will be able to advise the topics which overlap into A Level content. Your son can choose to either attend the JC classes and listen to the lesson recording which is relevant to his school requirement. All these arrangements are complimentary for our IP students.”

Parent 2: “If he has questions after learning to the recording, how can he clarify?”

Winners: “Your son will be given Mr Chua personal mobile number to clarify any doubts he has.”

Parent 2: “That’s great! I think I’ll let him attend Mr Chua’s lessons instead of getting another tutor to cover the A Level content with him.”

The Truth About IP Chemistry

Our definition of IP Chemistry: Secondary school Chemistry leading to a school-based examination in Year 4/Secondary 4 instead of the standard O Level examination. Students learning IP Chemistry often continue with A Level Chemistry in Year 5/JC 1.

The IP Chemistry students Mr Sean Chua has taught are from

  • ACS Independent,
  • Catholic High School,
  • Cedar Girls’ Secondary,
  • CHIJ St Nicholas Girls’ School,
  • Dunman High School,
  • Hwa Chong Institution,
  • Nanyang Girls’ High,
  • National Junior College (secondary section),
  • Raffles Girls’ School,
  • Raffles Institution,
  • River Valley High School,
  • Singapore Chinese Girls’ School,
  • Temasek Junior College (secondary section),
  • Victoria School

Since IP Chemistry content is usually made up of 85-90% O Level syllabus and 10-15% A Level syllabus, parents must find a teacher who is not only familiar with O Level syllabus but also A Level syllabus.

As A Level syllabus is a huge leap from O Level syllabus, teachers who are experienced with the demands of both syllabus often graduate with a Chemistry or related degree.

Don’t you agree it is very important that the teacher knows how to delightfully engage students, effectively deliver the abstract concepts and consistently keep them interested?

Mr Sean Chua is probably a rare find.

He graduated from NUS Applied Chemistry (2nd Upper Hons) and had 3 years of working experience in the chemical industry before he set up Winners Education in 2008.

He has written 33 years of O Level and A Level Chemistry Papers solutions in the 10 Year Series which have been adopted as a must-have for all students.

Our IP students enjoy the best of both worlds – O Level & A Level.

They attend the O Level classes and enrich themselves in the A Level classes when their topics overlap into A Level content.

The A Level classes are complimentary for them. In fact, some even complete the whole topic as they are interested to learn more even though they only need 5% of the content. Some say the questions asked by the JC 1/Year 5 students accelerate their understanding.

Many IP students come to us because they realise early the importance of building up firm foundation in their basic concepts and associated keywords.

With the strong foundation, they are able to handle A Level content with more ease, confidence and even more joy while the rest of their peers struggle, dread and fear Chemistry.

If you are looking for IP schools specific Chemistry tuition classes, you would have to look elsewhere.

Our IP students join us because they do not fancy seeing schoolmates in tuition classes. They prefer to learn in a “non-school” setting where they see unfamiliar faces from all over Singapore.

Call us at 88290998 to find out more about our tuition classes for IP Chemistry students.

Chemistry Tuition Bishan by Chemistry Specialist

Although I have only been going to Winners Education for half a year, my results have improved tremendously.

Mr Chua is an amazing teacher who is able to get the full attention of his students during lesson and is able to make chemistry more interesting for them. He ensures that all of his students understand the concepts well instead of making them memorise the content which allows the students to be able to tackle harder questions as they have a strong foundation of the subject. I would strongly recommend this tuition centre for anyone struggling with the subject.

6 Features of our Online Chemistry Tuition to Help Your Child to Learn Chemistry Better, Faster and Easier

By Winners Education

Online Chemistry Tuition for O Level Pure Chemistry, IP Chemistry, A Level H2 Chemistry

With the suspension of centre-based tuition lessons, we have quickly moved all our lessons to Online Live! Learning (OLL) system.

Students, parents as well as educators have to embrace this change in teaching and learning. We are committed to support all our students to continue learning effectively.

In fact, we started OLL during the March holidays to test out the best approach so that our students continue to understand clearly with the change of teaching medium.

6 Features of Online Live! Learning™ by Winners Education

  1. Weekly 2 hours lesson involving whiteboard teaching of key concepts, discussion of exam-based questions
  2. 1 hour of complimentary Q & A Monday for students to clarify their doubts and test their understanding live!
  3. Notes are available for download and print to complement our students online learning
  4. 24/7 WhatsApp support by Mr Sean Chua personally
  5. All students have access to the recordings of their lesson for them to recap at their own pace
  6. Graded assessment will be collected and marked by Mr Sean Chua so that we can track our students’ progress.

In Winners Education, to allow our students to adapt to the ‘new’ way of learning, we work harder (on our rest day) by having an additional Q & A Monday session, complimentary for all our current students. This session will allow students to be exposed to more answering techniques and at the same time clarify their doubts.

Our Online Live! Learning (OLL) system is designed to be very similar to our physical lesson where it involves

  • Whiteboard teaching of key concepts
  • Exam-based questions discussion
  • Ask any questions freely
  • 24/7 WhatsApp for clarification of doubts, just like what many students are already doing
  • Graded assignment is to be submitted via online for marking after each topic is completed.

We are grateful that students and parents are embracing this change as we move along with the development of the Covid-19 situation.

We are certain we will all emerge stronger after this episode.

Online Live! Lesson as usual at Winners Education. Call us today at 88290998 to join the rest of 90+ students to continue learning effectively and pass Chemistry with Distinction.
